Configuring your exam and/or quiz to use Respondus Lockdown Monitor

Step-by-step guide

Respondus Monitor has a limited license. It is currently restricted to 'Online' only courses.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Respondus has waived the licensing requirements until July 2020, any course can use this product. If it is past, please check with Information Services before enabling this feature.

Step 1: Turn Editing On

Navigate to your course where the activity is that wish to enable Lockdown Browser on and click 'Turn editing on'

Step 2: Add the Respondus Block

After you have editing turned on, you will see an 'Add' dropdown on the right-side of your course where you can add different blocks. Click the 'Add...' dropdown and choose 'Respondus Lockdown Browser'.

Step 3: Configure your Quiz

Using the block you just added to your course, click on 'Dashboard...'

Once the Respondus page loads, find your quiz you want to enable Lockdown Browser on and click the dropdown arrow and choose 'Settings'

On the settings page, click 'Require Respondus LockDown Browser for this exam'. You can also click the + icon for more options

If you want to allow the use of a calculator and/or allow the students to use an iPad select the 'Advanced Settings' + icon and enable the options.

Step 4: Enable Respondus Monitor

Within the Respondus Monitor section, select the option, 'Require Respondus Monitor for this exam'

Step 5: Startup Sequence

You can leave all these settings at their default selection and continue to Step 7. They might just give you a headache down the road if configured incorrectly.


In the 'Startup Sequence' dialog, choose the options you wish to enable. When you enable the options, you will be able to view playback video of each option selected. You can also click 'Edit Text' to customize the message shown to the students.

Step 6: Additional Settings

Within the 'Facial Detection Options' and 'Advanced Settings' choose the options you wish to enable.

Step 7: Save and Close

Once you have selected your options, click on 'Save + Close' below the Monitor section. You have enabled 'Lockdown Browser' for your exam/quiz.
